I can’t change the direction of the wind
by Mitchell Reinthaler
“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”
This quote by Jimmy Dean is a very inspirational quote and relates to the topic of who or what inspires me to drive inhabited by drugs, alcohol and distractions of texting. It relates, because many people do drive intoxicated with drugs and alcohol and many people now a days are always on their phones, but I can’t change what other people do.
What I can do is make sure I stay sober driving and stay away from distractions that could disrupt my driving skills. There are many times where people do stay sober and aren’t distracted but still end up being seriously injured by someone who is driving distracted or intoxicated. Nobody can change what those people do or even those outcomes. I can only change for the better myself and make sure I drive sober and undistracted to make sure I do not hurt others which in turn will help keep me safe as well.
Many people inspire me to drive this way, but the people who inspire me the most are my brothers and sister. They are my best friends and we are as close as we can possibly be. I am the second oldest and I want to set a great example for my younger brothers as well as keeping everyone safe. Half the time I am not just driving by myself. I have them in the car all the time with me, and I want to protect them and make sure I do everything I can to keep them healthy and safe.
I have an obligation as a big brother to protect my brothers and sister from harm, and driving sober and undistracted, helps in the smallest of ways. They are my biggest inspirations. They push me to do my best, they challenge me to overcome difficult situations, they are there for me no matter what the situation is, and they do everything in their power to keep me safe.
I have had friends personally impacted by these distractions of driving, and hearing those stories really makes myself want to be the safest I can be when driving. I want to protect not only myself so that I can continue to protect my siblings, but I also want to protect my siblings and anyone that I am accompanied with while in the car. Driving can be very dangerous in today’s world. Not only are there distractions of drugs, alcohol and texting, but people want to go fast and get places as quickly as possible. I am the same way, I want to go fast and get places quickly, but I have to remember that others are being distracted by drugs, alcohol and texting and I also have to protect myself and the people around me.
With this being said, my siblings inspired me to act this way. They want me to be safe and I want to be there for them as well throughout their whole lives. We are best friends and want the best for all of us. The world is a dangerous place and is already filled with enough distractions. To drive distracted is just a way to test your chances. My siblings mean the world to me, and I want to live the longest possible life I can with them. With this being said, I have to be a role model to them with how to drive, and they also have to be a role model for myself and inspire me to keep being safe and improving myself as a whole.
