How to Get Your Kentucky Driver License (Ages 16-17)
- Get your paperwork together. Bring your original or certified birth certificate, Social Security card, No Pass/No Drive (School Compliance Verification) form, and an application signed by your parent or legal guardian.
- Take a vision test and written knowledge test at your Circuit Court Clerk’s office to get your Permit.
- Carry your Permit for 6 months while you log 60 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (including 10 hours at night) with your parent or other licensed adult who is 21 or older.
- Check online to see if appointments are available for your driving skills test. When you pass the road test, a Kentucky State Police License Examiner will put an “Intermediate” sticker on your permit.
- Take an approved drivers ed course. There are a few to choose from: high school drivers ed, course from an approved private driving school, or an online graduated license course.
- Once you have met the drivers ed requirement and have held your Intermediate License for at least 6 months, you can apply for a regular driver license with full driving privileges. Congrats!
