Ohio Drivers Ed: Online, State-Approved, and Built to Help You Pass

First things first - you need to be 15 years and 5 months old to be able to start this course. Once you have your permit, enroll in a state-certified professional driving school.

You'll do 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction hours with them. You also need to complete 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice (10 of which must be at night) with your parents or legal guardians.

You don't need to log these 50 hours. Instead, your parent or guardian will simply fill out a Fifty Hour Affidavit and get it notarized. You'll need to present the affidavit at the Driver Exam Station when you test for your license.

Aceable’s Ohio drivers ed online course has ten levels, totaling 24 hours of online instruction. You can complete four hours of instruction per day, and then you will be locked out of the course until the next day. This is a requirement of the state of Ohio. You can use this break to learn to juggle, work on your tan, or shock your mother by cleaning your room without being asked. Your choice.

Here’s the process in a nutshell:

1. Take the first two levels of Aceable's Ohio Drivers Ed.
2. Get your permit at the BMV.
3. Work on your behind-the-wheel hours.
4. Finish the rest of your Aceable Ohio Drivers Ed course (levels 3-10).
5. Get your Class D License at the BMV.

At the end of each level is a short level assessment consisting of 10 questions. The questions will be a mix of multiple-choice and true/false questions. You must score at least 70% or better (at least 7 out of 10 questions correct) in order to pass and go on to the next level. If you fail a level assessment, you can take it again. There is no limit on how many times you can take a level assessment and you don't have to pay again to take a level assessment more than once.

You'll be asked identity security questions at various points throughout the course. If you miss a question (which we doubt you will, since these questions are all about you!), the state of Ohio requires that you are locked out of the course for 24 hours.

The final exam consists of 50 questions. The questions will be a mix of multiple-choice and true/false questions. You must score at least 75% or better (at least 38 out of 50 questions correct) in order to pass and receive a Certificate of Completion from Aceable. If you fail the final exam, you can take it again 24 hours later. You have three chances to pass the final exam. After failing the final exam three times, you'll be locked out of the course. Unfortunately, the state of Ohio requires that you restart the course from the very beginning when this happens. Passing this final exam proves to the state of Ohio that you passed your drivers ed course. You'll still have to take and pass a written knowledge exam at the BMV to get your permit.

If you’re under 21 and have had your Class D License for less than a year, you:

• Can’t drive between midnight and six in the morning.
• Can’t drive with more than one passenger who isn’t a family member (unless supervised by a parent or guardian).

  If you’re under 21 and have had your license for a year or more, you can’t drive between 1 am and 5 am (unless supervised by a parent or guardian). Warning! If you get a traffic offense conviction within the first six months of having a license, the state may require a parent or guardian to supervise your driving for six months or until you turn 20 (whichever comes first). Getting multiple violations or a single alcohol-related violation before you turn 21 is sure to result in a suspension. So follow the law, stay safe, and stay on the road.

You'll receive your certificate of completion from Aceable after completing the course. The certificate will be emailed to you as proof that you've met your drivers ed requirement. The course comes with free electronic delivery and you can download from your dashboard and print it yourself. You can also purchase an expedited electronic certificate for an additional fee.
