You need your license before you can get on the road on your own. For many teenagers, the whole process can seem complicated, but it doesn't have to be. Here is everything you need to know about how to get your Nevada driver's license in Las Vegas, step by step.
1. Take Driver's Ed Classes
The first step to getting your Las Vegas driver's license is taking driver's ed classes. You'll learn all there is to know about traffic laws, signs, and safe driving practices.
Don't start yawning just yet—these courses can be interesting and a lot of fun. If you're not a fan of stuffy classroom and in-person classes, you can always take online classes. Aceable, for example, offers Nevada driver's ed classes fully online. You can log in whenever and wherever you want, making it the most convenient option out there.
2. Apply for a Learner's Permit
The next step is to apply for a Nevada learner's permit. You can do this while you're still taking driver's ed. Just keep in mind that you need to be at least fifteen-and-a-half to get the permit.
Make sure you get the following documents:
Proof of identity
Birth certificate
Valid U.S. passport
Permanent residency card
Proof of Social Security Number
Social Security card
W-2 or IRS Form 1099
Pay stubs with SSN
Proof of Nevada residency
School enrollment forms
Bank statements
Form DMV-005, filled out and signed by your guardian
Form DP-38, Minor Affidavit & Information Sheet
Has to be filled out and signed by you and your guardian.
Form DMV-301, Certification of Attendance
This proves you're attending school and not missing classes.
Ask your school administrator to sign it.
If you're homeschooled, you can just take your Notice of Intent to Homeschool.
Form DMV-002, Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card
Your guardian will need to go to the Las Vegas DMV with you to sign this form.
Then, take them to your local DMV office. There are several in Las Vegas:
7170 N. Decatur
2621 E. Sahara Ave.
8250 W. Flamingo Rd.
1399 American Pacific Dr.
There, you'll be asked to pay $22.25 for a licensing fee and $25 for testing fees.
Yes, You Must Pass a Written Test
That's not all. To get your permit, you first need to pass a written test at the DMV office. Remember that Aceable driver's ed course we recommended? It will come in handy here.
The test contains 25 multiple-answer questions. You'll need to pass with at least 80%, or else pay $10 every time you retake the test. If you studied the Nevada Driver's Handbook and aced Aceable's level assessments, you have nothing to worry about!
3. Practice Behind the Wheel
After passing the test and getting your permit, it's time to get behind the wheel. You can practice driving with any adult 21 and older who has had a license for at least a year.
In Las Vegas, you need at least 50 hours of driving practice. Ten of those hours have to be at night (so, after sunset and before sunrise). Keep a log of all your practice sessions and have fun, but be safe.
4. Ace Your Nevada Driving Exam
Once you've completed the 50 practice hours and feel comfortable with your skills, you can take the driving exam. You'll need to schedule it in advance. Since you're in Las Vegas, call (702) 486-4368 to arrange a test date, or schedule your test online.
5. Get the Full Nevada Driver's License
Finally, the last step is picking up your full teen driver's license. You've earned it! Make sure you meet all the requirements first:
You've had a learner's permit for at least six months
You're 16 years old or older
You've completed Aceable's 30-hour Nevada driver's ed course
You have at least 50 hours of driving experience under your belt
You haven't had alcohol or drug convictions in the past six months
You haven't committed any moving violations in the past six months
You haven't been involved in an at-fault crash in the past six months
Do you check off all those boxes? If so, congrats! Go to your local Las Vegas DMV office and take all your documents from step two with you. You will also need to show the practice sessions log and Aceable's certificate of completion (it will be in your email inbox).
