Online Texas Parent Taught Drivers Ed

The PTDE packet is a set of official forms from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) that registers your intent to take parent-taught driver's ed. It includes the DL-90A Classroom Instruction Affidavit, the DL-91A Classroom Instruction Log, and the DL-14A Application for Texas Driver License. You cannot get a Texas learner's permit or driver's license through the parent-taught path without it.

Where do I order the PTDE packet?

Only from the official TDLR website.PT_E.aspx ParentTaught It's not sold at DPS offices, driving schools, or through Aceable. Buy it once, then enroll in your Aceable course.

How long does it take to receive the packet?

You get an instant digital download as soon as you complete the purchase. A hard copy arrives by mail in about two to three weeks. The digital version is enough to start the process — you don't have to wait for the physical copy.

Do I need the packet before I start the Aceable course?

Yes. Order and receive the PTDE packet before you begin any coursework. If you started early, pause the course, hold onto the packet for three days, then contact Aceable support to get realigned.

What forms are inside the packet, and which ones do I fill out first?

Three forms:

• DL-90A — Your parent instructor signs this, noting 6 hours of instruction for Concurrent Driver's Ed (Aceable course #116).
• DL-91A — Only fill out Module 1 before applying for your permit; it needs a minimum of three dates logged.
• DL-14A — Personal info and selection of the Class C Learner License.

When should we sign the forms?

Wait. Don't sign anything at home. You and your parent instructor must sign the packet forms in front of a DPS employee at your DPS visit.

Who qualifies as a parent instructor?

A parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent, or legal guardian who:

• Has held a valid Texas driver's license for at least 3 years
• Has no DWI or criminally negligent homicide convictions
• Has had no license suspensions, revocations, or forfeitures in the last 3 years
• Has fewer than 6 points on their license
• Is not mentally disabled

If the instructor holds an out-of-state license, they must provide a certified 3-year driving record.

What do I bring to DPS after finishing Level 1?

• The completed PTDE packet forms (unsigned — see above)
• Your printed Aceable Level 1 completion certificate
• A Verification of Enrollment (VOE) form signed by the driving school administrator
• ID: Social Security card + birth certificate, passport, or Certificate of Citizenship
• Two parental residency documents showing name and address

What if I lose the packet?

Re-download it free from the TDLR website using the email address or receipt number from your original order. You don't pay the $20 again.

Do I keep using the same packet for behind-the-wheel hours?

Yes. After you get your permit, the packet's Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Log tracks all 44 required hours (7 observation, 7 training, 30 practice including 10 at night). One hour max per day, so plan for at least 44 days.
