Step 1: Gather the Necessary Documents

You will need to work with your local BMV in Mason, Ohio to begin the process of getting your driver's license. The BMV requires several documents that identify your identity and Ohio residency.

You'll need documents that show your full legal name, date of birth, and that you are a legal U.S. citizen, such as:

  • Birth certificate

  • U.S. passport

  • Certificate of citizenship

  • Military ID

You also will need to provide documents that display your Social Security number, including:

  • Social Security card,

  • W-2 Form

  • 1099 Form

The Ohio BMV will also require documentation of your Ohio street address. Things you could bring in are:

  • A printed paystub with your address listed

  • A postcard or mailed correspondence from the Ohio BMV, or other mail sent to your address

  • Utility Bill

You can find a full list of acceptable documents on the Ohio public safety website.

Step 2: Prepare for the Knowledge Exam

One of the first steps in the Mason, Ohio, driver's license process is to pass a driving knowledge test. The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions regarding motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs. If you really want to "get a jump" on the process, consider signing up for an online driver's ed course with Aceable.

Driver education in Mason, Ohio, is required for getting your license if you are under 18. If you complete it early in the process, it will help you pass your knowledge exam easily.

At the very least, review a sample knowledge exam online.

Step 3: Visit a Mason Ohio Driver Exam Station to Complete your Knowledge and Vision Test

Once you are 15 years and 6 months old, you can visit your local Driver Exam Station. There are none in Mason, but you have two nearby options:

  • 19 Dave Avenue Unit C, Lebanon, Ohio, 45036

  • 11177 Reading Road, Suite 201, Sharonville, Ohio 45241

Your vision test just makes sure you can see well enough to drive. And for your knowledge test, you must answer 75 percent of the questions correctly to pass. If you do not pass, you will need to wait 24 hours before re-taking.

Step 4: Purchase your Driver Permit

Once you pass the knowledge and vision test, you can visit the deputy registrar license agency to purchase your temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC). The closest one is at 775 Reading Rd, Mason, Ohio 45040.

Step 5: If Under 18, Complete Driver Education in Mason Ohio and Driving Hours

A requirement for your driver's license if under 18 is to complete a driver education class at a licensed driver training school. The class must include 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and eight hours of driving time.

Aceable is an excellent choice for your driver's education course as it is approved by the Ohio Department of Public Safety.  You can obtain your driver's license in Mason, Ohio without having to step foot in a traditional in-person class.

You must also complete an additional 50 hours of driving with a licensed driver accompanying you that includes at least 10 hours of night driving.

Step 6: Complete Your Driving and Maneuverability Test

After six months of holding a TIPIC, you can schedule your driving skills test. You must present your TIPIC, and if under 18, proof of completing a driver's education course. You must provide a car in good working condition for the driving test.

The test consists of two parts that will assess your driving and maneuverability.

Keep in mind that if you are over 18 and fail the driving skills test, you will be required to complete an abbreviated adult driver's education course before you are allowed to retake the test.

Any time you fail the driving skills test, you must wait seven days to retake it.

Step 7: Get Your Driver License Mason Ohio at the Deputy Registrar Office

Once you pass the driving and maneuverability tests, you can visit the deputy registrar's office to trade your TIPIC for a driver's license.
