If you're 15 – 17.5 years old, here are the steps you need to take:

1. Take Aceable's 30-hour California Drivers Ed course and wait for your Certificate of Completion in the mail.
2. Head to the DMV to take your vision and written tests. After passing these tests, you'll be given your permit.
3. Complete a two-hour lesson with a professional driving instructor and have them sign your permit. After this lesson, you can start on the 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with your parents or guardians. You'll also need to complete two more two-hour lessons with a professional driving instructor.
4. Head to the DMV to take the driving test and get your license!

If you're 15 – 17.5 years old, you'll need to bring:

• Before you head to the DMV, you'll need to complete the DL-44 application onlineDriver Licenses Identification Cards Dl Id Online App Edl 44 Portal.
• Your social security number (you aren't required to bring your social security card, but you will need to know your social security number)
• An original or certified copy of a document verifying your birth date and legal presence (US birth certificate, US passport, permanent or temporary resident card, etc.). 
• Two (2) proofs of California residency (rental or lease agreement, deed or title to residential property, mortgage bill, utility bills, school documents, medical documents, employment documents, etc.). The address on the residency documents must match the residency address on the DL-44 application. Photocopies are acceptable.
  • Parents, legal guardians, or children can use a birth certificate, and spouses or domestic partners can use a marriage license or domestic partner registration certificate to trace their relationship to the individual named in the two acceptable residency documents.
• $34 application fee. This fee is good for three exams within the 12-month period and pays for both your permit and driver's license. If you don't obtain your license within the 12-month period you must go through the application process again.
• Certificate of Completion of Driver Education (we mail this to you when you complete your Aceable course)

You'll take the vision and written permit testsCalifornia Knowledge Test Prep Course Drivers Ed at the DMV in order to get your permit. You'll also need to provide a fingerprint and signature, and take a picture.

At the end of each of the ten levels is a level assessment consisting of 10 questions. The questions will be a mix of multiple-choice and true/false questions. You must score at least 70% or better (at least 7 out of 10 questions correct) in order to pass and go on to the next level. If you fail a level assessment, you can take it again. There is no limit on how many times you can take a level assessment and you don't have to pay again to take a level assessment more than once.

There will be a final exam at the very end of the course. It will have 50 questions; you must score at least 70% or better (at least 35 out of 50 questions correct) to pass and receive a Certificate of Completion from Aceable. If you fail the final exam, you can retake it. There is no limit on how many times you can take the exam, and you don't have to pay again to take it multiple times. Passing this final exam proves to the state of California that you passed your drivers ed course. You'll still have to take and pass a written knowledge exam at the DMV to get your permit.

For students who are 15 – 17.5 years old, you'll need to enroll in a two-hour driving lesson with a professional instructor once you have your permit. After this initial two-hour lesson, the instructor will sign the back of your permit, and you can start working for 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with your parents or guardians. Before getting your license, you must complete two (2) additional two-hour lessons with a professional instructor.

If you are 15 – 17.5 years old, you must take three 2-hour lessons with a professional driving instructor (for 6 hours). If you are 17.5 years old or older, you aren't required to take professional driving lessons. Instead, if you're 17.5 – 18 years old, you can practice driving with a parent, guardian, spouse, or adult at least 25 years old or older with a valid California driver license. You can then head to the DMV to take the driving test when you're officially 18 years old. If you're 18 years old or older, you can practice with any adult at least 18 years old or older with a valid California driver license. You can head back to the DMV to take the driving test whenever you feel ready to ace the test!

After completing your drivers ed course and obtaining a permit, you must complete behind-the-wheel instruction with a local driving school.

If you're 15 – 17.5 years old, you can get your license when you meet all of the following requirements:

• You are at least 16 years old.
• You've held your permit for at least six months.
• You've completed three (3) two-hour lessons with a professional driving instructor.
• You've completed all 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with your parents or guardians.

If you're younger than 18 years old, you'll need to bring the following:

• Your permit (with the second page signed by your parents, verifying they've provided 50 hours of instruction, 10 of which are at night)
• Completion of Behind-the-Wheel Training (DL 388) from your professional driving instructor
• Proof of financial responsibility, such as a liability insurance policy, surety bond number, or a current copy of the insurance policy that shows that your vehicle is properly insured. Your driving test will be postponed if you don't provide this do
