The Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Program

Texas requires every new driver to complete an Impact Texas Drivers course before their driving skills exam. There are two versions β€” one for teens, one for adults β€” and which one applies to you comes down to your age. Here's how to figure out which course is yours, what's in it, and how to get it done.

ITTD vs. ITAD: Which One Is Yours?

CourseWho It's ForLengthCost
ITTD (Impact Texas Teen Drivers)Teens under 18 completing a driver education program~2 hours / 8 modulesFree
ITAD (Impact Texas Adult Drivers)Adults 18 and older completing a driver education program~1 hour / 3 modulesFree

Both courses are free, both are required before your driving skills exam, and both are available online through the Texas DPS.

ITTD: Impact Texas Teen Drivers

The Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) program is a free, state-required video course developed by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Its focus is distracted driving and the real, documented consequences of phone use and multitasking behind the wheel.

The course isn't a lecture. It uses real stories from teens who've lost their lives to distracted driving, paired with Texas-specific crash data, to make the risks impossible to brush off. The program's core message: these aren't bad kids making obviously bad decisions. They're good kids who made one preventable choice.

It also includes the GDL Made Simple video, which covers Texas's Graduated Driver License restrictions, including passenger limits, nighttime driving rules, and other requirements that apply while you're on your provisional license.

The 8 Video Modules

ITTD is broken into eight 15-minute modules, totaling roughly two hours. You don't have to watch them all at once. Each module can be completed independently, but you must finish each one in full before moving to the next.

Once you complete all eight modules, you'll receive a completion certificate by email. You can also log back into the ITTD website at any time to retrieve and reprint it.

Heads up: You must submit a printed paper copy of your certificate. Electronic copies are not accepted by the DPS or Third Party Skills Test (TPST) schools.

Who Has to Take ITTD?

ITTD is required for any teen who has completed a driver education course β€” whether through Parent Taught Drivers Education (PTDE)Parent Taught Drivers Ed Guide Blog or an instructor-taught program β€” and is preparing to take the driving skills exam. If you're under 18 and getting your license in Texas, this is your course.

The 90-Day Window

This is the part most teens overlook. Your ITTD completion certificate is only valid for 90 days. That means:

  • Complete ITTD after you've finished all classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction
  • Schedule your driving skills exam within 90 days of finishing the course
  • If you don't pass your skills exam within that window, you'll need to restart and complete the entire ITTD program again

Don't knock out ITTD months before you're ready to test. Save it for when your exam is actually on the calendar.

Before your road test, you need to complete the free, state-required ITTD course β€” eight short videos, about two hours, and you're done. Here's exactly how it works.

ITAD: Impact Texas Adult Drivers

The Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) program is the adult version of the same requirement. Also developed by the Texas DPS, it covers the same core theme β€” distracted driving β€” but uses real stories and statistics specifically relevant to adult drivers.

ITAD is shorter than ITTD. It's about one hour, broken into three modules you can watch independently. Same rules apply: finish each module in full before moving to the next, and print your certificate when you're done.

Who Has to Take ITAD?

ITAD is required for any adult 18 or older who has completed an adult driver education course and is preparing to take the driving skills exam. If you're 18 and getting your first Texas drivers license, this is your course.

The 90-Day Window

Same rule as ITTD. Your ITAD certificate is only valid for 90 days from completion. Complete ITAD after you've finished your 6-hour adult drivers ed course, and schedule your skills exam before the window closes. If it expires, you start over.

Where to Take ITAD
