How Much Does it Cost to Get Your Ohio Drivers License?

Can you really put a price on freedom? When it comes to the freedom of hitting the road in Ohio, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) has put a price on it. That price is the cost of getting an Ohio drivers license.

The cost mostly depends on how old you are when you get a license. If you’re under 18 years old you’ll have to take drivers ed, which comes at an additional cost.

Cost of an Ohio Temporary Instruction Permit - $22

Before you can get an official, all-out drivers license you have to get a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC). To get a temporary instruction permit you have to pass the knowledge test, take a vision test and pay the $22 fee.

Cost of an Ohio Drivers License - $19.25-24.25+

Cost of getting an Ohio drivers license

After cruising around and learning the ropes with your temp permit for six months, it’s time to get an actual license. Taking the driving test at a local driver exam station is free to do, but if you actually want to receive a license you have to pay a fee.

The Ohio drivers license fee varies depending on your age:

  • 16 years old - $24.25
  • 17 years old - $23.00
  • 18 years old - $21.75
  • 19 years old - $20.50
  • 20 years old - $19.25
  • 21 years old and older - $23.00

Even though you pay a little more, anyone under the age of 18 will be in probationary status and there will be driving restrictions. Don’t break the rules or your license could get suspended!

Over 18 and failed the driving test? That’s a bummer, but it happens. Before you can take the test again you’ll have to complete an abbreviated adult driver training course. The course consists of four hours of classroom instruction (either in-person or online), which you’ll have to pay for out of pocket. The cost is around $65 for an online course.

You’ll also be required to either take 4 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor (at an additional cost of $200+) or you can do 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver who’s at least 21 years old.

And don’t forget - you have to pay a renewal fee once you turn 21 and every 4 years after that.

For the Minors Only: Cost of Drivers Ed in Ohio - $350-450

Cost of getting an Ohio drivers license under 18

Now, for all of you minor drivers there’s an additional cost. The state of Ohio requires that anyone under 18 years old complete drivers ed before they can get a license.

The cost of Ohio drivers ed isn’t a set price. There are two components to drivers ed (each with their own cost), and how much you’ll pay depends on who provides the education. The typically costs are:

  • Classroom Instruction: approx. $50
  • Behind the Wheel Instruction: $300-400

One thing to make sure of is that your drivers ed providers are approved by the Ohio BMV. If not, it’s nothing but a waste of your hard-earned money.

There’s also a hidden cost of drivers ed. If the instruction isn’t all that good, you run the risk of failing your knowledge and/or driving tests. The tests don’t cost extra to retake, but your ego may pay the price.
