The Basic Requirements for a Teen Georgia Driver's License in Cumming

In order to qualify for a Class D Provisional Driver's License, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old.

  • Have held a learner's permit for at least one year and one day.

  • Have never had your learner's permit suspended.

  • Have satisfied Joshua's Law Requirements

What Is Joshua's Law?

Joshua's law in Georgia requires teen drivers to complete at least 30 hours of classroom instruction at an approved online driver's education school, plus behind-the-wheel training and parent-supervised driving practice. You can meet these requirements in one of two ways:

  1. Method One

    • 30 hours of instruction at a state-approved school, like Aceable.

    • Six hours of behind-the-wheel training at a state-approved school.

    • 40 hours of driving while supervised by a parent or guardian. Six of those 40 hours must be at night.

  2. Method Two

    • 30 hours of classroom instruction. Again, this can be completed online.

    • 40 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction taught by your parents.

Enroll in the Right Driver's Education Course

Education is a big part of getting your Cumming driver’s license. Teens age 16-17 have to take 30 hours of classroom instruction from a state-approved driving school. Aceable's Georgia driver's ed course meets that requirement. What's more, you can take the class entirely online, right from your smartphone or computer. If you are 18 or older, you are not required to take the course. However, it may still help you pass the written exam.

Gather the Required Documents for Your Georgia Driver's License

This is what you'll need to get your license:

  • Proof of your identity, address, and US citizenship or lawful status in the United States.

  • Your Social Security number.

  • Your learner's permit.

  • Proof that you have completed Georgia's alcohol and drug awareness program, either through your high school or online.

  • If you're under 18, you must provide proof that you are enrolled in school, such as school transcripts, a report card, or a school ID card.  If you are not enrolled in school, you must present a high school diploma or GED.

  • If you're 16 or 17, bring proof that you have completed driver's education.

Pass Your Teen Driver's License Exams

If you are a 16- or 17-year-old teenager in Georgia, you'll need to pass three tests to receive your Class D provisional driver's license.

  • Vision exam: In Georgia, you must have the minimum acceptable vision of 20/60 in one eye, with or without glasses or contacts, and a field of vision of at least 140 degrees.

  • Knowledge exam. This includes both the Road Rules Test and the Road Signs Test. You must score at least 15 out of 20 on each test to pass.

  • Road skills test. You'll be expected to complete some or all of the maneuvers covered in this road skills test overview.

Once you've completed these requirements, you can apply for a provisional license.
