Four Driving Distractions to Avoid

Watch this video for information about the top distractions while driving. That text can wait. Pay attention and stay safe!

Here’s the thing about distractions -- they are EVERYWHERE! From the hottie sitting next to you in class to that new episode of Grey’s Anatomy on TV while you’re trying to study, distractions are capable of messing you up big time. But when driving, distractions aren’t just annoying, they’re deadly. Let’s talk about some of the biggest driving distractions so that you can be sure to avoid them.

1. Cell Phones

Okay, this one’s a no-brainer. Time spent looking at your phone is time you’re not looking at the road, and not looking at the road while you’re driving is...problematic. Unless you have a hands-free system, don’t take calls while driving and wait until you’re not driving to text bae back.

Ted is distracted by tweets while driving. Don't slide into those DMs until you reach your destination, Ted.

2. Music

Listening to music while driving is great and helps to pass the time, but sometimes music can be a big distraction. Fumbling with radio stations, trying to change the CD, or trying to hook up your AUX cord while driving takes the focus off your responsibilities as a driver and makes you a danger to yourself and others. Don’t like that new Drake song? Wait until you’re at your destination or a red light to change the station. But also, Drake is 100 always, so…

Drake hates distracted driving. Drake says don't touch that radio.

3. Friends

No, I’m not talking about Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, or Joey. Riding around with your friends is one of the best things about getting your license, but you have to be careful. The more people you have in the car, the more distracted you’ll be. It’s hard not to want to join the convo when your friends in the back seat are dancing and laughing and Snapchatting away. FOMO is real! But getting you and your friends to your destination is more important and that should always stay your main focus.

Don't let FOMO get you down and distracted. When you get to your destination there will be no mo FOMO.

4. Cigs

Smoking is always a bad idea. It’s especially a bad idea when driving. Think about have to take your hands off the wheel to light up, you can only use one hand to drive because that cig is in the other hand, and what happens if you drop it? You’re frantically searching around your seat and floorboard trying to find it before it burns you or your carpet. It’s not worth it!

Cigs--not worth it! I would do what she says if I were you.

Distracted driving is serious business. 1 in 10 fatalities are caused by a distracted driver. Choose to stay safe.
